I was an EMT for a few years when I was much younger. Reading your books makes me feel so proud that I was part of this special world for a while. Your books capture both the insanity and the joy of this world. Thank you for reminding me of how proud I felt when I could make a positive difference on what was such a bad day in a stranger 's life. And for reminding me of how hard some calls were. I have literally crawled over broken glass to support the head and neck of an accident victim to remove him from his car. Fortunately I was wearing thick winter pants and it was safety glass from a windshield,which is rounded rather than sharp! But it was like crawling on pebbles and rather uncomfortable. The man was able to walk out of the hospital a week or so later. He was very lucky that he was found in time. His car skidded off a snowy road at high speed, clipped the top corner of a sign while airborne,landed out of sight in a gully, and threw him threw the windshield. He crawled back into the car and passed out. A state trooper spotted the small ding in the corner of the sign and pulled off the road to investigate and called in the accident and saved the man's life. The car was not visible from the road and the small ding in the sign was the only clue that the car was there. The man had been there in the freezing weather for at least six hours and was suffering from exposure as well as the effects of the accident, but he made an amazing recovery. Fortunately I was agile enough to climb through the passenger side window and support his head whole the rest of the crew members helped the trooper slide the man onto a backboard so we could carry him up the hill to the ambulance and get him to the hospital quickly. He did have a neck injury but was not paralyzed and made a a good recovery.
Working in a similar field, these stories really hit home!
